Cruising: Its Future, USPs and Economic Influences
Cruising is becoming more and more popular amongst holiday makers across the world. Modern cruise ships are very much like floating hotels that allow passengers to travel to different places or destinations without having to change accommodation continuously.
Economic Influences
When people go on cruises they usually disembark at particular locations to visit land sites. These ports of call, usually larger in size and have very beneficial effects on the local economy. This is due to the fact that tourists who disembark from cruise liners usually have disposable income which they are prepared to spend at ports of call and local towns. Moreover, ships also need refuelling, restocking of food, maintenance and repairs which also increases business surrounding the area of a particular port of call. At base ports many members of staff are needed. Skilled staff is required for cleaning, repairs and possibly even building cruise vessels in dockyards.
Every company wants a Unique Selling Point (USP) and for the cruising industry that is no different . Cruise companies need these to set it apart from its competitors. Cunard Line, for example, has the name QE2 at its disposal, arguably the largest cruise liner. While other companies have a link with a land based resort such as the Disney Cruise Line with World Disney Resort. The Royal Caribbean International cruise company has a pre-paid “Wine and Dine” programme. Princess Cruises has “The Love Boat” connection. These are all USP’s which make each cruise company unique in their own way .
Future of the cruising
The future of the cruising industry seems to be leaning towards active and adventurous types of customers. As you walk on the decks of the modern day mega vessels you can be overwhelmed with the sport facilities in board such as mini gold, swimming and even basketball or tennis courts. The industry will have to change along with customer’s wants and needs and due to the fact that this always fluctuates, vessels are constantly modified accordingly. For the foreseeable future the cruise industry will increase its sales, profitability and revenue.
